Nyer Urness House

Nyer Urness House

Seattle, WA

Providing safe, dignified housing for homeless adults is the mission of Compass Housing Alliance.

Located in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle, the Nyer Urness House is a seven-story, mixed-use building that contains 80 compact studio apartments as well as space for case management, health, and group therapy services. Shared residential amenities include a commercial kitchen and dining room, gathering spaces, and library and media rooms.

The typical floor plan is symmetrically organized around a tight core that provides abundant daylight to all corridors. An extensive green roof and rooftop terrace provide high quality outdoor space.

During project planning, addressing the concerns of adjacent residents and business owners was a significant challenge. The realization of this project is a testament to the thoughtful collaboration of the owner, operator, and design team in terms of addressing significant program and budget imperatives while being responsive to the neighborhood.
