Olowalu Residence

Olowalu Residence

Maui, HI

Integrated into the hillside of the Mauna Kahālāwai, this plantation-style residence occupies a swath of former sugarcane land, in the Olowalu Valley. Now a dedicated agriculture zone on Maui, the property will be transformed into a family homestead and newly established farm. The design focuses on creating an efficient and thoughtful building form, responsive to the island vernacular and environmental opportunities.

The main house perches just below the top of the site, running parallel to topography. With expansive views down towards the Pacific and up the tip of Pu’u Kukui mountain side, all rooms orient to the landscape beyond. At a modest 2,450-sf of interior living space, the heart of this three-bedroom home is the centrally located great room with cooking, dining, and living spaces blending seamlessly. Deep lanais line the mauka and makai sides, offering cover from the elements while expanding usable living space.

The project embraces a palette of warm greys with horizontal shiplap siding and a standing seam split-pitch roof; chosen for its timeless subtly and ability to blend into the muted terrain beyond.
