Mercerwood Shore Club
Mercerwood Shore Club
Mercer Island, WA
The Mercerwood Shore Club opened in 1953 as a family-oriented private recreational club on Mercer Island. The club’s extensive grounds provide members with beach access and boat slips, a 25-meter pool, and four tennis courts. In 2013 the Club elected to replace their aging clubhouse with a new 2-story facility and surrounding grounds for a new central gathering hub, with a modernized lounge, fitness center, and locker facilities.
Recognizing the site’s impressive views to Lake Washington, the new clubhouse is designed as a long linear bar with a fully glazed east façade at the upper level for uninterrupted views from the new lounge and fitness center. An extensive deck, accessible from sliding doors along this façade, creates a new spectator vantage over the existing pool for the club’s swim meets.
At the lower level, the building spills out onto a series of terraces that step down to the grade of the main pool. These terraces expand the exterior space in the summer and function as impromptu stadium seating during events. A new spa and toddler pool on the terraces add diversity to the club’s amenities.
