The PEAK Boys & Girls Club of Mercer Island
The PEAK Boys & Girls Club of Mercer Island
Mercer Island, WA
Located on the campus of Mercer Island High School, The PEAK is the result of a partnership between the King County Boys & Girls Club and the Mercer Island School District. The facility contains a teen center for high school students, Boys & Girls Club for younger children, and a 17,000 SF field house. It also includes game rooms, multi-purpose rooms, learning centers, classrooms, and a recording studio and stage.
The field house accommodates a range of activities including basketball, volleyball, badminton, batting cages, and baseball practice. All is day-lit with translucent strip windows and skylights. To address neighbors’ concerns regarding the scale of the facility, the field house was set into the existing hillside and buffered with dense landscaping to reduce its apparent size.
The three-story club is organized with childcare at the lowest level, the Boys & Girls Club at the main level near the entrance, and the Teen Center at the upper level. Monitored entries provide supervision between the public and club spaces. All was configured for optimum openness, light admission, and transparency.
